Smart watering issue?

Thanks for contacting us. If you turn on the smart zone feature, Netro will skip the schedules(including manual schedules from user programs) when there is a chance of significant rain(>0.2inch).

If the weather data of Darksky is not correct, you can switch to Weather Underground. (Settings->Controller->Weather Provider and save the changes) If you fail to change the weather station, please write to us support@netrohome.com and we can help you change it.You can also go to Discover page, tap the "+" button on the upper right corner to correct rainfall.

You could customized the weather restrictions now as well.  You can customize it, like I want to skip the schedules on the day after tomorrow as well, or I want to skip if rain more than 1 inch. The setting is in "setting -> preferences -> rain".

Of course, all weather forecast could be wrong. Netro tries the best to provide accurate watering schedule even with incorrect forecast. First, we periodically update the weather data, once the weather data is changed, we update the un-executed schedules ASAP. Second, we re-check the weather data for the past, update our model, and adjust following schedules accordingly. For example, Netro may not water today due to large rainfall from forecast data. The next day, Netro re-check the weather data, if no rainfall found and your soil is dry enough, Netro will water accordingly.

Hi Alan,


The default setting of Netro Pixie timer is "basic" mode.(Settings->Zones->Smart Zone)  In this level, no smart schedule will be generated. You will need to add programs manually (go to Settings->Programs to add programs) and Netro will skip programs when there is large amount of rain(>0.2inch/ 5.08 mm) or watering regulations.

You can try the "advanced mode". In this level, your zones will be watered automatically by Netro and smart watering will be automatically adjusted depending on your zone specification. To set up your Pixie timer, you can set the sprinkler type as "Dripper" if you use drippers. Please note your zone will have longer watering duration if you select dripper because dripping/emitter system is really slow in moving watering to the ground.

You can enable the "advanced" mode to check if it meet your watering needs. To adjust smart watering, you can go to Settings->Garden->Smart zone, select level "advanced"->Mode to select your preferred watering mode.

Does Pixie timer have an integrated water back flow?

Hi Sierra,


The Pixie timer has a valve internally to turn on and off the water. It does not have the backflow preventer and you may need to install one on the output of the Pixie timer.

When a zone is being watered, the watering duration cannot be changed. You can go to the Schedule page to skip the following watering activities. 

If you want to add a rest time between zone, please go to Settings->Preferences->Scheduling->Rest time.

Not enough watering time

Dear customer,


We recommend watering only when the soil is dry enough in order to draw more oxygen into the roots, leading to a lusher landscape. For grass, we suggest you can set moisture to skip watering as "90%"; moisture to add watering as "60%". This is also the default setting for grass in Netro watering mode. Setting moisture to add watering as "20%" would be a bit low.

Advanced smart watering not working

Our R&Ds have fixed the issue, it should not happen again. Please let us know if the problem remains. 


This is caused by a corner case bug. Here are some details if you want to know. Our cloud server updates the smart schedules at least once per day. Netro determines that your yard need to be watered for about 1 hour tomorrow, due to soak time, we split it into several schedules. On tomorrow morning a little later than 4:00am, your first smart schedules was executed. Our server starts to update your smart schedules. With the first executed schedule, the moisture is increased, above your threshold 50%. Therefore, the remaining smart schedules are cancelled. That's what you saw. Without your manual schedules, Netro will executed another smart schedules on 4:00am the day after tomorrow. So your yard will not be short of water, but watering frequently is not good for your grass. 


We have identified this problem and fixed the bug.

Thanks for your feedback and I will forward your sugestions to our R&D. Here are some typical flow rate: 
MISTER: 2 inch/hour
FIX_SPRAY_HEAD: 1.5 inch/hour
BUBBLER/ROTOR_HEAD: 1.0 inch/hour
ROTARY_NOZZLE: 0.7 inch/hour
ROTARY_EMITTER: 0.5 inch/hour


The reason why we use the area and depth flow rate(inch/hour) to calculate the water usage is that when the sprinkler system is professionally designed and installed, the zone is usually covered evenly, which means the large the zone is, the more sprinkler heads it needs. So the equation we use is 


Area(inch^2) x depth flow rate (inch/hour) x time (hour) = water usage(inch^3)

Another way of calculating the water usage is:

Number of heads x volume flow rate (inch^3 per head per hour) x time (hour) = water usage(inch^3)

You can see that the second equation uses the volume flow rate that needs to be provided by the user while the first equation uses the depth flow rate which can be largely determined by the sprinkler type. We actually had an internal debate on this and in the end we decided to go with the first equation because we want to reduce user inputs as much as possible to simplified the setup process. A
