How to Water Trees and Shrubs

Netro Support
Updated at 2018-06-04 10:07:08 UTC

The amount and frequency of watering depends on the root system of your plants. Shrubs and trees -known as woody plants - have the potential to grow deeper root systems than flowers which means they draw water from a larger volume of soil. In general, if you receive a good rain every week or 10 days, these woody plants are probably getting the water they need. They thrive with a deep watering with less frequency than most flowers. When plants are shallow-rooted they will need more frequent light irrigation just like the lawn.

1.How to Water Shrubs

The most efficient way to water woody shrubs is to apply water slowly to the soil allowing it to penetrate deeply to rewet the entire root system without running off. This can be done by repeatedly moving a slow flowing hose from bed to bed or by using a drip irrigation system that allows water to leak gradually along the entire length of the irrigation tubing. It is important that the water reaches the plants roots. It is unnecessary and wasteful to water deeper than the plant's root zone.

If you are using an irrigation system, it is worth noting that woody shrubs need to be watered separately from shallow rooted plants and thus need to be on a different irrigation valve than lawns or flowers.

2.How to Water Trees

Trees need regular water during the first several years after planting, until the roots have grown deep enough to carry the plant through dry periods. Once established, however, most trees require only infrequent irrigation.

Stop watering when runoff starts. Soils high in clay accept water slowly, often as little as 1/4 inch per hour. Water infiltration is especially slow in compacted soils. If water starts to pool or run off, stop irrigating, let the water soak in, and start watering again.

Don't saturate the soil for long periods. Water displaces air in the soil, so long periods of soil saturation can suffocate growing roots. Take a long enough break between irrigation cycles to allow the free water to be absorbed. If in doubt, probe or dig to make sure that the soil isn't soggy below the surface.

3. How to Determine the Right Amount of Water

Don't wait for the plants to tell you with wilting and leaves dropping off. Then youll just be watering to keep the plants roots alive so it may possible come back later. Inspect the soil. Dig around with your hands, soil probe, garden trowel, or shovel. Youll be able to tell quickly how far down you are actually watering.

With a little practice, you will be able to maintain the proper moisture balance to ensure your shrubs get the water they need to thrive in your landscape.

Kickstart the Netro Zigbee Hub and Pixie-Z1

Netro Inc
Updated at 2022-09-13 06:23:11 UTC
Topic: General

To the Netro community:

We are excited to introduce our new products, the Netro Zigbee Hub and the new smart timer Pixie-Z1. They combined deliver a different experience of smart watering system.

The Netro Zigbee Hub hosts a long-range local Zigbee network that links all the end devices. It connects to your router (wireless or wired) to transfer data between the end devices and the Netro cloud service. The Hub will work with all our Zigbee products including the new timer Pixie-Z1(introduced below) and the new soil moisture sensor coming this year, as well as the new 4-Zone sprinkler controller and the new weather sensor coming next year.

The new host timer Pixie-Z1 is re-designed from the original Pixie timer in many ways:

1. Always online for instant quick runs. No more sleep mode

2. Powered by two AA alkaline batteries with approximately one year of battery life. Notifications on low battery

3. Supports Google Home and Google Assistant

The Netro Zigbee Hub and Pixie-Z1 are expected to ship in September. To join the Tester program please email to info@netrohome.com and we will send you a discount code in return for feedbacks.

Thanks,

Netro Inc

Netro and Home Assistant

Jens Wymeersch
Updated at 2021-07-28 18:18:16 UTC

Although that I'm still hoping Netro will start understanding their appliance/app is only a smart part of a smart home ecosystem and start integrating with Home Assistant. Even huge vendors like Tuya, have understood that this is essential for most Home Automation Enthusiast.

For the time being, some folks have used the API to get some data to home assistant https://community.home-assistant.io/t/netro-integration/51012/13

I believe a lot of us are happy with the appliance, but aren't looking at it often enough. Result in my case at least that my whisperer was out for more than a month. This could have been avoided if we had an integration to Home Assistant who would have alerted me.

So please Netro, do the extra mile !

Notifications

It would be great if you add an option for notifications once irrigation starts/finishes.Sometimes we need to start it manually and need to wait until one zone is completed to start the next one. A notification in the phone would avoid opening the application all the time to see if the current zone is completed.

User Guide - Manual watering with your Pixie timer

Netro Inc
Updated at 2020-06-22 07:37:55 UTC

The Pixie timer is designed for automatic watering. However, occasionally you may still need to turn on/off the water manually. Before explaining manual watering from the app, it would be helpful to understand how the Pixie communicates with the Netro cloud server.

By default, your Pixie turns on its WiFi module once every hour to sync up with the server. The sync-up usually takes less than one minute. For the next 59 minutes the timer will be sleeping and disconnected from the WiFi until the next sync. When the timer is sleeping, it is unaware of the schedule changes, including the manual watering.

Therefore, when you start a manual run, the timer is most likely in sleep mode. It will have to wait until the next sync-up to start the watering. The waiting time will be less than 60 minutes. Take the following screenshot for example:

The current time is 5:24AM and the next sync is scheduled at 6:17AM. Therefore the waiting time is going to be 53 minutes. After you press the Start button, you can go to the Schedule page and the manual run at  6:17AM will appear on your calendar.

Fertilization program

Andrea Merito
Updated at 2020-04-27 14:30:47 UTC

Good morning,

I ask you for a suggestion in your app.  in the program menu, in addition to displaying the manual and automatic programming, can you enter a command regarding fertilization?  I use fertilizers from the Bottos company, where each product has its weight and timing.  Maybe create a partnership with the big fertilizer companies.

Best.

Andrea
